Keloid Scar Treatment

Keloid scars occur when there is an overgrowth of tissue at the site of the healed skin injury. Keloids can vary in color and can be firm and rubbery or shiny and fibrous. The keloid scar is benign and non-contagious but can be accompanied with itching, pains, and changes in the texture of the scar. Keloid scars are sometimes confused with hypertrophic scars, but, the main difference between these two different types is that hypertrophic scars don't grow past the original wound's boundaries but keloid scars do.

An older technique was to apply a silicone keloid scar treatment to an area, then cover it with a pad or a dressing that presses down on the area. This sometimes aided in flattening the scar and was effective in reducing growth.

Most scar treatment procedures are expensive and delicate. Surgeries, steroid injection and laser treatments rank high in this regard. Any mistake during these procedures can be costly and also result in infections. It is a known fact that keloids expand in claw-like growths, within short periods, over normal skin.

Silicone based products are available in two main forms: gels and sheeting. Both of these options have been shown to work, but it is typically more cost effective to use gel based products because you will only need to use a small amount of the gel to cover the wound. In turn, by covering the wound with the silicone, you will not only help protect it from natural elements such as water and wind, but you will also be able to allow the scar to retain moisture from surrounding, healthier areas of skin which will help it heal more efficiently.

Keloid scars are part of the Hypertrophic group of scars in that they have the ability to expand in size. However, Keloids are a very unique type of scar as they are the only kind of wound which can expand beyond the original boundary of the injury. This means that a simple piercing from an earring can result in an over-sized Keloid that expands well beyond the ear.

You are in firm control of the amount of gel you use. Since you use only as much of the gel as you need to cover the damaged skin, you waste none of it and use less.You cannot control the amount of product the damaged skin gets from sheeting. They waste it on surrounding skin and must be replaced when they come off.

Few doctors will even attempt to cut out this kind of abnormal scar. Cutting can cause it to grow back even larger. Medicine can't unravel the mystery of keloids. So a doctor can't predict if surgery will make it worse. Anyone who has this kind of wound or a family history, should avoid elective surgery of any kind.
